Oud-West

densely built and populated area with with monotonous, but characterful, city streets

The architecture of old storey houses and the monotonous and long rows of houses from the 19th century have now become a very popular neighborhood for urban living.

Wilhelminastraat in Amsterdam Oud-West

Within walking distance of both Museumplein and Leidseplein, and with the adjacent Vondelpark, the Oud-West district is a diverse, densely populated and central part of the city. It roughly covers the length of the Overtoom, a major thoroughfare, the length of Kinkerstraat, a major shopping street and the areas between these two parallel streets.

With a population of about 33,000 inhabitants it has - together with Westerpark, De Baarsjes and Bos en Lommer - merged into the new city borough of Amsterdam West.

Highlights

The main attractions in Amsterdam Oud-West are De Hallen - a cultural and culinary centre in old tram depot - and the Vondelpark - the largest city park.

De Hallen

The opening of De Hallen - a cultural and culinary centre located in a former tram depot - has given a huge boost to the surrounding neighborhood. More and more tourists are finding their way to Oud-West and the area has become an increasingly desirable area to stay.

Oud-West has recently witnessed an unprecedented wave of fresh new cafés that have opened their doors to the public.

Horse riding school

Hollandsche Manege - or Royal Riding School - is one of the last remaining and most beautiful city riding schools of Europe.

Ten Katemarkt

At the Ten Katestraat you can find the bustling Ten Katemarkt. It is a bit hidden in a shopping street (Kinkerstraat). The market is not that big. It has around 130 stalls selling various fabrics, foods and clothing. A small section of the market continues on the other side of the Kinkerstraat. Open from Monday until Saturday.

Coffee salons

Thanks to an unprecedented wave of fresh new cafés that have opened their doors to the public recently, Oud-West is now known for its many trendy coffee parlours. Just outside the touristic city centre, this is an excellent place to feel the atmosphere of real Amsterdam and to meet locals.
