Amsterdam West

borough to the west of the city centre

Amsterdam West, with almost 145,000 inhabitants, is the most densely populated borough of Amsterdam. It was formed by 4 other parts of the city: Oud-West, Westerpark, Bos en Lommer, and De Baarsjes.

foodhallen

The Foodhallen, Amsterdam West's food hall concept — bringing independent proprietors, and eclectic choices, under one roof — has been a great success since its opening in 2014.

In Amsterdam West, quiet, attractive residential neighbourhoods alternate with busy shopping streets.

The western expansion of the city started in the last quarter of the 19th century. The first neighborhoods to be built were quickly and cheaply constructed 19th-century apartment blocks for worker's and middle-class families, currently in high demand for their charming, urban outlook.

Highlights

Tourist attractions of West include the cultural scene and popular festivals at Westergasfabriek (in Westerpark), the Amsterdam School architecture in Spaarndammerbuurt (with the Amsterdam School museum 'Het Schip') and De Baarsjes, daily street market Ten Katemarkt, cultural and culinary centre De Hallen, fairy-tale church Vondelkerk, Royal Riding School Hollandsche Manege and nearby Vondelpark.

Leidseplein nightlife centre and the Jordaan neighbourhood are also in the immediate vicinity.
