The 100-year-old, open-air street market features nearly 300 vendors selling everything from fruits, vegetables, fish, meats, spices, chocolate, cheese, flowers and plants to cheap clothes, jewelry, shoes, bike accessories, bedding, fabrics and cosmetics.
The emphasis is on food of every description and from every corner of the globe, but clothes and other goods are on sale too, often cheaper than anywhere else.
The fish stalls (about halfway down) are a favorite for photos, and souvenir hunters can find everything from Dutch cheese to fluffy clog slippers and canal-house fridge magnets.
The market is popular with tourists as well as locals. It is a great place to try out Dutch street food, like raw herring, fried potatoes, warm stroopwaffles, poffertjes (small pancakes) and naughtily shaped chocolates are among the treats on offer.
It can get very crowded on certain days and times. On busy Saturdays the market attracts more than 50,000 people.
If you want to experience the 'real' Amsterdam at its multi-cultural best, this market is not to be missed.
