Café Brandon   since 1626

A quirky café with an odd history

Brandon

Café Brandon is one of the oldest still existing cafés in Amsterdam. It is believed to have 1626 as its opening year.

Loved by neighbourhood residents of the Canal Belt, celebrities, students and some lost tourists.

Brandon is a very cosy old brown café in the canal district. It is run by Amsterdam native Rogier, who took over the bar from his father.

On Friday and Saturday nights, when the bar is full of people, the tables and chairs are pushed aside to create a dance floor with a DJ in the funny corner booth. It is a crazy place.

This quite unusual café is especially loved by local Amsterdammers. It is a place where people meet. Most tourists on their way to the nearby Anne Frank House or coffeeshop ignore Brandon.

Brandon is located on the ground floor of a 17th-century corner house on Keizersgracht and has a typical ojive façade* (from the 19th century).

Interior

Brandon is a small, old-fashioned café with 2 areas and a hallway:

  • a small room where you can order your drinks. It has a traditional bar tap and characteristic, tiered sideboard behind the bar.
  • a 'living' room where you can sit or stand.

The walls and ceiling are still brown from smoking in earlier years.

The café's interior retains a classic and traditional feel, adorned with old pictures of the Royal Family and Ajax (the old Brandon owners were donors to the Ajax football club) on the wall, and many other details including a variety of mounted animals.

* A type of façade not so common on Amsterdam's canals.

The interior is still in its old state. Everything has been left as it was encountered when Jan and Corrie closed it down overnight. And it still looks the same now! Only the billiard table has gone.

It's like entering a cafe where 50 years ago all the glasses had been washed and cleaned up, and which would not open the next day. There were still full bottles of wine and lemonade. Even the cigarette butts were still in the ashtray.

'Not for sale, not for rent'

The cafe is run by Amsterdam resident Rogier, who became its owner more than 20 years ago. Before that, it stood empty for years because the previous owners did not want to sell it.

For 18 years, a slate board hung behind the windows: 'Not for sale, not for rent' **. The old owners, Jan and Corrie Brandon, lived above the café and during their lifetime the café would remain closed.

Location

Café Brandon has a nice location in Amsterdam's Canal Belt, on the corner of Keizersgracht and Leliegracht. It has an entrance on 2 sides.

From the cafe, you have a view of the Westerkerk tower. The Anne Frank House is a stone's throw away.

** 'Niet te koop of te huur' (in Dutch). That slate still hangs inside the café today.

What is Amsterdam's oldest café?

The archives are inconclusive on what Amsterdam's oldest café is, but it is certain that Brandon belongs in the top five.

Other very old cafés include: In 't Aepjen (1544), Karpershoek (1606), Chris (1624), De Druif (1631), Papeneiland (1642) en Hoppe (1670).
