The Bimhuis is a 'black box' on piles adjacent to Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. The concert hall is characterised by a glass façade directly behind the stage, offering panoramic views of Amsterdam city centre.
The intimate hall of the Bimhuis is known for its personal atmosphere with perfect sound. It has an amphitheatre-like floor plan and a combination of seating and standing places.
Everyone plays in the Bimhuis, from stars to amateurs, from mainstream to avant-garde. Many American jazz legends performed here, including Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra.
Many famous Dutch jazz musicians also performed here, like Hans and Candy Dulfer, Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker, and Han Bennink.
Each Tuesday night is the Tuesday Jam , a jam session with international, young and acclaimed talent at the café. Access is free for both jazz musicians and jazz lovers.
With the jazz department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, the performance is never short of impressive talent on stage... and sometimes of world-class musicians who visit this prime jazz venue spontaneously.
Bimhuis and Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ are located on the banks of the IJ River at the Eastern Docklands (Oostelijk Havengebied). It is at walking distance from Amsterdam Centraal Station.
The Bimhuis can be reached from the main entrance via a route inside the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, but it also has a separate entrance.
