Mata Hari in Amsterdam's Red Light District where you can eat at a canal side terrace

Mata Hari is bar restaurant with a casual living room atmosphere. It is open for lunch and dinner.

A special staircase takes you from the bar area to the bisto-like restaurant on the first floor. Previously was this space the illegal gambling palace of famous underworld crime figure Frits van de Wereld, who was one of the first major hashish importers.

Who was Mata Hari?

A century ago, on February 13, 1917, Mata Hari was arrested in her Paris hotel room in Plaza Athénée on charges of spying for the Germans. After two days of interrogation the French were convinced that she was a very dangerous spy. Six months later she was executed. She became an icon of good and evil, with a mesmerizing aura, especially for senior men with authority.

On the menu

Oysters | Shrimp kroket | Steak tartare | Nordic Cod | Rib-eye | Monkfish on the bone... and more.

Reservation

As the restaurant is very popular, it is recommended to book a table  in advance via the Mata Hari's official website.

Needless to say, you don't have to make a reservation for the bar area.

Location

Mata Hari is located in the very heart of the old city of Amsterdam, not far from Nieuwmarkt and on the edge of the Red Light District.
