Café de Engelbewaarder has a cozy, old-fashioned atmosphere and a welcoming ambiance.

Relaxed café for locals and tourists alike to socialize, enjoy drinks, and light meals.

Opened as a literary café in 1971 it changed character in 1982 when it started organising jam sessions. It has a large partly covered outdoor terrace. This café is always bustling with life.

The café's interior retains a classic and traditional feel, adorned with bookshelves, artworks, and a relaxed setting.

Exhibitions

De Engelbewaarder has a dedicated area designated for hosting art exhibitions and cultural gatherings, in addition to serving as a café and bar.

Jazz on Sundays

At the end of Sunday afternoons, a drummer, bassist and pianist hold a jam session every week from 16:30 to 19:00, and during this session legendary jazz musicians and young talent join in. Admission is free.

Location

Café de Engelbewaarder is located on the first floor of a historic canal house on 15th century Kloveniersburgwal canal, between Nieuwmarkt and Amstel River in Amsterdam's old city centre.

It can only be reached by climbing up an old stone staircase at the front of the facade.

Lunch is served between 12:00 and 16:00, dinner from 17:30 to 21:30 and bar snacks from 12:00 until 22:00.
