home of the football club Ajax
The Amsterdam ArenA is the home of football club Ajax. The stadium is also used by the Dutch National Team for international matches. On a regular basis, the events calendar includes concerts and dance festivals. The stadium will also host 3 group stage matches and 1 match in the 1/8 final of the Euro 2020.
The stadium, which opened in 1996, was one of the first in the world to combine a retractable roof with a grass surface. This caused some problems in the beginning: the grass rolls would not grow in the shade of the open roof and had to be replaced up to 4 times a year. Its all-seated capacity is 53,631.
The inaugural match was between the home team Ajax Amsterdam and AC Milan. The first goal in the new stadium was scored by Dejan Savićević.
ArenA Stadium Tours
The home stadium of AFC Ajax is impressive in its architecture. The Amsterdam ArenA offers Guided Stadium Tours in English and Dutch that include the press room, mixed zone, VIP areas, dressing rooms, and Gallery of Fame. Children up to 12 years could also join the interactive ArenA Kids Tour.
Both international and Dutch artists have given concerts in the ArenA, including Madonna, Michael Jackson, André Hazes, David Bowie, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Phil Collins, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Coldplay.
The 1st edition of dance event Sensation , in 2000, was held in the Amsterdam ArenA. It is now a worldwide house music dance event that takes place in stadiums and arenas around the world... and still every year in the ArenA.
