The thickest trees in town | 11/11 |
Leidsebosje
Since the 16th centrury trees are planted In almost every street of Amsterdam. This makes Amsterdam one of the greenest cities and elm capital of Europe. The municipality maintains about 250,000 trees in the city.
Strict rules are applied throughout Amsterdam about cutting, preserving, protecting and compensating of trees. For cutting trees with a diameter of 10 cm or more a cut permit is required and the chopped down tree needs to be compensated.
The 2 platans on Leidsebosje (photo), between Leidseplein and Stadhouderskade, are 152 years old. They have a circumference of nearly 7 m. They are not the oldest trees, but surely the thickest of Amsterdam.
