Oudemanhuispoort Book Market is situated in a secret passage with a hidden courtyard
The Oudemanhuispoort or 'Old Man's House Gate' is a passage near the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam where second-hand textbooks, prints and sheet music are sold.
In earlier days the surrounding buildings and hidden garden of the Oudemanhuispoort were an almshouse for the elderly. Today you can shop in the many stalls that line both sides of the passage.
Halfway through the passage is a large door that gives access to a green courtyard, which nowadays belongs to the University of Amsterdam.
At this book market, Vincent van Gogh sometimes bought books. For lack of money, he paid with portraits.
Aside from second-hand books, historic maps, sheet music, engravings and interesting old prints and posters are also sold.
