A typical Amsterdam sandwich bar where almost everything is home-made: the steak tartare, roast beef, mayonnaise, croquettes, pea soup.
Famous for its croquettes
The Dutch aren’t famous for their food, but one thing is definitely worth trying, the ‘kroket’. A croquette is made of meat ragout covered in breadcrumbs and then deep fried.
You can get croquettes throughout the city, but the best can be found at Van Dobben.
Broodje Halfom
A typical sandwich commonly eaten in Amsterdam is a Broodje Halfom* (half-and-half). This is a sandwich with salted meat (pekelvlees) and boiled beef liver (runderlever).
* Originally an Amsterdam Jewish tradition, where the beef always has to be kosher and no butter is used. As early as 1850, Jewish-Amsterdam sandwich shops are known to have served a salted meat sandwich with liver.
