The Modern Contemporary (Moco) Museum Amsterdam focuses on proven pioneers and protagonists, so-called 'Rock Stars of Art' within various art movements. The museum is a private initiative of LionelGallery owners Lionel and Kim Logchies.
For decades Lionel and Kim worked with renowned artists like Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Picasso and Salvador Dali. But they have also developed a big interest in the up and coming Street Art movement and they keep themselves up to date about all novelties within the underground scene, led by the new Warhol of the street art, Banksy.
Mystery street artist Banksy
Banksy is the pseudonym of a street artist whose identity remains unknown. He began his graffiti career in Bristol and became more widely recognized around Bristol and in London.
The artwork of Banksy is characterized by striking images, often combined with slogans. Often engaged with political themes, satirically critiquing war, capitalism, hypocrisy and greed. Common subjects Banksy uses include rats, apes, policemen, members of the royal family, and children. Banksy's worldwide fame has transformed his artwork from acts of vandalism to high art pieces.
The museum is located in Villa Alsberg, between Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum at the Museumplein. The townhouse was designed in 1904 by Eduard Cuypers, cousin of the renowned Pierre Cuypers who was responsible for the Rijksmuseum and Centraal Station.
