History

NH Collection Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, established in 1866, took its name from its first owner, tailor Adolf Wilhelm Krasnapolsky*, whose family originally came from Kiev.

He first opened a popular café, added rooms for rent to it and later rebuilt it into a modern hotel.

* The name Krasnapolsky has been immortalised in literature. In his novel Finnegan's Wake James Joyce named a colour after him, Krasnapolsky red.

It was the first hotel in Amsterdam to have - at the end of the 19th century - warm water in each of the rooms, equipped with telephones and already in 1883 electricity.

Complex of buildings

Facing the Royal Palace the hotel had such a success, that Krasnapolsky bought 39 small houses in the area to build the biggest 5-star hotel in the Netherlands with 451 rooms.

He also built a 'winter garden', a chic glasshouse with a domed roof and palm trees, and installed electric lighting.

Eat & drink

Guests can take breakfast in the beautiful, spacious and light Winter Garden, while afternoon tea is served in Grand Café Krasnapolsky.

An exclusive dinner can be enjoyed at the Michelin starred cuisine The White Room  and sipping a bespoke cocktail at Bar The Tailor .
